City Science selected to produce decarbonisation study of East Midlands Airport

20 July 2023

City Science has been commissioned by Midlands Net Zero Hub and Midlands Connect to deliver their decarbonisation study of East Midlands Airport. This work brings together our expertise across energy, transport and carbon accounting, and our mission to deliver a blueprint for the decarbonisation of similar ecosystems around the UK.

For example, it builds on our work developing Local Area Energy Plans (e.g. in South West Wales) and transport decarbonisation studies (e.g. for England’s Economic Heartland).

In collaboration with our clients, we will determine the airport’s current carbon emissions, project energy demands (to 2040 and 2050) and identify pathways to accelerate decarbonisation. Our baseline analysis will support and inform the development of a robust Strategic Outline Case. We will outline the interventions, investment required and delivery timescales that support the decarbonisation of the airport, whilst considering benefits to the wider freeport area. We will be considering the transport and energy needs of the airport, which is the UK’s largest dedicated air cargo operation, and working with partners and stakeholders to establish the future energy needs of the site.

Our ambition is that the outcomes of this work will shape the trajectory of other nationally significant decarbonisation projects in the future.
