Project Brief

Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans (LCWIPs) are a new Government initiative to underpin and provide evidence for prioritised investment in walking and cycling infrastructure. City Science is providing LCWIP analysis, in full or in part, for a range of clients and intermediaries.

City Science Response

City Science has developed tools and processes to build a full-purpose gravity model at a granular spatial resolution focused on extracting relevant data for cycling and walking.

City Science produces a range of analyses including desire lines, route-generation, heat maps and isochrones to assess the current provision for walking and cycling. GIS data is added to evaluate hilliness and speed of likely routes. City Science has developed a ‘cycling and walking potential’ methodology based on Transport for London best practice, but adapted for local data availability. This establishes priority routes to meet demand to maximise modal shift. In addition, City Science has developed route analysis tools to statistically identify links that could unlock demand and evaluate where routes are currently falling short of cycling and walking design principles – in particular identifying priority network gaps to improve coverage and ‘permeability’.

Outputs

The output is a detailed and comprehensive network priority plan and an evidence base for future strategic cycling and walking infrastructure investment.
